Posted on LynneTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A wonderful experience. A very warm sauna, and very cool North Sea. Bring water. Bring a towel to sit on, and sit on it. Read the pre arrival advice on the website to make it easier. Staff on hand on arrival to help guide and point out the safe entry points for any sea dips - there’s a known rip. Be prepared to get changed on the sea wall and have your belongings in a big plastic container outside.Posted on Joanne JoplingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The North East is so lucky to have this fantastic place 😊 it's so relaxing but also invigorating!Posted on David LinsleyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a superb afternoon with Steam and Salt , a group of pals booked an hour in the large sauna unit , we were met on arrival and immediately felt at ease, the dos and donts explained where to put your clothes . A great view from the large window of the surf competition taking place , and three dips in a nippy ( 6 degrees) North Sea on a high tide which meant we didn't have far to walk . The hour flew over . Would we do it again ? Definitely. Thank youPosted on Anthony ScottTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Missed some of the querks from the tents with using the oils and the stones. Felt more relaxing in the tents. Please can you advise if you do smaller/quiter times. ThanksPosted on SharTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Superb experience. Fantastic location would actually like 1.5hrs as dipping in the sea the time goes quickly.Posted on Siobhan CarrTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing! Our sauna experience is designed to help you rest your body and your mind. The healing power of heat has been used for centuries to promote relaxation and physical and emotional well-being.
In our saunas, where modern wellness meets ancient roots, you’ll be invited to slow down and rest, to use the time to disconnect and then to reconnect, using the healing power of heat and optional contrast therapy through exposure to cold water.
At Steam and Salt, we are committed to helping you achieve your wellness goals. Whether you’re looking to relieve stress, improve your circulation, access post exercise recovery, detoxify your body, or simply relax and unwind, then Steam and Salt are here to help. Take a moment to breathe, enjoy the uninterrupted view of our beautiful Longsands beach through our large panoramic windows, and recharge!
Exposing your body to high heat and steam in an exposed space for health purposes … a visit to the sauna isn’t just pleasurable and relaxing, but emerging evidence suggests that sauna bathing has several health benefits…
Improved cardiovascular health… The heat gets your heart pumping, mimicking gentle exercise without the associated strain on your body making your heart stronger without risking injury.
A reduction in the risk of vascular and neurocognitive diseases and conditions such as arthritis, all because of the effects of sauna therapy on circulatory, cardiovascular and immune functions.
Reduction in stress … Heat causes the body to release endorphins that in turn reduce the feeling of stress in the body.
Relieves joint and muscle tension … great for post workout! A sauna warms and relaxes your muscles.
Helps remove toxins … Sweating removes toxins from your body and so time spent in a sauna can aid the detoxification process, also clearing the skin of impurities.
Aids in weight loss … what’s not to like about this?! A few extra pounds of water weight can easily be lost through sauna sweating!
So, sauna makes you feel good … and its good for your health !
It is important to remember that your experience with Steam and Salt is about enjoying our beautiful sauna session. In between gentle rounds of heat ( on average between 10-20 mins in the sauna), it is important to leave the sauna to cool down and there are cold showers nearby to be able to do so.
We are situated by the sea however – and while Steam and Salt DO NOT encourage nor facilitate sea dipping or swimming, if you choose to enter the sea during your hour with us, please remember that you do so entirely at your own risk.
Tynemouth Longsands, is one of the most beautiful spots on our coast, but it commands absolute respect. At Longsands, rips currents are often found near the rocks at both the north and south ends of the beach ( there is also very often another rip in the middle), and can be deceptively calm-looking, appearing as a “gap” in the breaking waves:
The Rip at the South end, is directly opposite the saunas and so do NOT to enter the sea here. Entering this calm patch can result in being quickly pulled away from the shore into deeper water, which can lead to cold water shock and/or drowning as you gasp and struggle against the current.
The RNLI’s gold standard is to swim between the red and yellow flags, where lifeguards are on duty and have assessed the day’s specific hazards. There are times where no Lifeguards are present however – and so if you decide to enter the sea, then it is generally safer to enter the sea further North, parallel to Crusoes -the large cafe at the bottom of the ramp entrance to the beach.
Avoid entering the sea opposite the saunas at all times.
If you do find yourself caught in a rip or in difficulty:
Float to Live: This is the most critical piece of RNLI advice. Tilt your head back with your ears submerged, relax, and try to breathe normally. Move your hands and legs gently to stay afloat. Shout and wave for help.
Please educate yourself on the dangers of sea swimming and how to prepare yourself. The RNLI have produced some excellent guidance – use the link below to read it thoroughly.
